Testimonial

My teachers were spiritual communicators and herbalists. My teachers communicated with plants through energy and vibrations. Don was very interested in what I was doing and he became my student over these many years. He learned a lot from me.

The students learned about the use of energies, whether on land or in the sea. Therefore, they learned about the use of plants from land and from the sea. Don has a deep understanding of these teachings and was able to teach his students in a way that they could see and understand the teachings.

The recipient of Don’s teachings would have a better life as they would understand their inner strength. He would not only be teaching them herbs and their usefulness but also about inner strength, energy, and being a whole human. I have seen Don turned students around into very calm, vibrant, and understanding people.

A Deeper Look At The Five Stages

First Stage: Explore the Land of Herbs, Fungi and How to transform them into Medicines

The first stage, "Explore the Land of Herbs, Fungi and How to Transform Them into Medicines," aims to empower you by providing you with the knowledge and skills needed to create your own effective herbal preparations.

Through this stage, you will learn about herbs (wild and cultivated), their history, politics, and uses for body systems. You will be introduced to herbs that have been proven effective in herbal practices and how to transform them into practical and effective preparations. Additionally, you will discover the limits of herbs and how to extend their power through practices like shamanism, Dreambody, and Ayurveda. You will also explore the spiritual quality of herbs and learn about herbal allies and plant-spirit medicine.

This stage will also cover important topics such as the importance of probiotics and the gut biome and introduce you to United Plant Savers. You will learn about wildcrafting, plan your own natural pharmacy garden, and discover which herbs to use to help bring about desirable changes in the body.

The skills you will learn through this stage will enable you to make herbal preparations such as tinctures, infusions, decoctions, oils, salves, poultices, syrups, homemade kefir, and smudges. You will also learn about the proper drying, storing, and use of herbs and the correct application of herbal preparations.

Ultimately, this stage offers you the opportunity to learn from an expert and gain a new skill that you can use to create versions of your favorite herbal remedies that you can trust completely. By the end of this stage, you will have the confidence to make informed choices about which herbs to use for yourself, your family, friends, and clients, and a system to apply your knowledge in creating and using herbal medicines and remedies.
__________________________________________________
Making herbal medicines is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of working with herbs.  It is a process that deepens and intensifies your contact with Nature and her marvelously enchanting ways. Making medicine is a folk art, first and foremost.  This knowledge needs to be in the hands of the people.  The skills you will learn here will make you an ally in the preservation and growth of this wonderful craft.
It is empowering to be able to make your own medicines.  It is an art which you can learn and apply right away.  In this lesson you will begin this exciting process.

In this module we cover: herbs (wild and cultivated), medicine making, botany, herbal history, herbal politics, Materia Medica and herbs for body systems. We introduce you to the herbs that we have proved effective in our herbal practice and why we chose them. We show you how to transform them into practical effective herbal preparations. We discuss the limits of herbs and how to extend their power through practices like shamanism, Dreambody and Ayurveda. Herbs then become our allies, dreaming companions and work on our energetic body. Learn plants based medicine and how just being with the herbs without even ingesting them can heal us. Learn how to incorporate them into your diet for high-quality and vibrational nutrition. As a bonus we will cover the importance of the biome and healthy gut bacteria.

As a potential student of herbs you might want to ponder these questions. The course is designed to give you answers or solutions to the questions.
  • Are you confident that you have a solid knowledge of key herbs and their uses? Would you like to feel confident?
  • How do you decide which herbs to study and why?
  • How do you choose which herbs to use for yourself, your family, friends and clients? Do you have a system to use?
  • How do you prepare, administer and apply the herbs?
  • What is plant-spirit medicine and why is it important?
  • What is an herbal ally and do you need one (or maybe more than one)?
  • How did pharmaceutical medicine become the dominant medical practice eliminating most alternative practices
  • Are herbs enough or do we need to make other lifestyle choices?
In this section we will:
  • Explore the spiritual quality of herbs.
  • Learn about herbs that grow in the wild and those found in an apothecary garden.
  • Plan our own natural pharmacy garden.
  • Learn about important herbs that nourish our bodies.
  • Discover which herbs to use to help bring about desirable changes in the body.
  • Cover wildcrafting and introduce you to United Plant Savers.
  • Learn about the importance of probiotics and the gut biome. Without healthy bacteria in our bodies we cannot receive the optimum benefits from herbs or foods.
  • You will also learn about propolis, Don's favorite natural remedy.
Creating and using herbal medicines and remedies is an art that is best learned from an experienced teacher. Our herbal medicine-making course provides you with an opportunity to learn from an expert and teaches you the following skills:
  • Making herbal preparations such as: Tinctures, Infusions, Decoctions, Oils, Salves, Poultices, Syrups, Homemade Kefir, Smudges, etc.
  • Terminology associated with herbal medicine making
  • Equipment required
  • Proper drying, storing and use of herbs
  • Correct application of herbal preparations
  • Using a Menstruum Ratio Table to make tinctures
This section enables you to make versions of your favorite herbal remedies that you can trust completely. It provides you with a new skill and a way to apply your knowledge by sharing or selling your unique preparations.

Second Stage: Herbs & Body Systems & Applying Systems Thinking

The second stage of the course, "Herbs & Body Systems & Applying Systems Thinking," offers a transformative learning experience that goes beyond just learning about herbs and their uses. This stage explores how all body systems are interconnected and regulated by the extracellular matrix, a dynamic regulating system that provides physical scaffolding and biochemical and biomechanical cues for tissue changes, differentiation, and homeostasis.

In addition to learning about the power herbs that support and nourish the extracellular matrix, this stage also covers the importance of Systems Thinking, paradigms, and metaphors and how they shape our worldview. Through this stage, you will gain a deeper understanding of how to apply Systems Thinking to your study and use of herbs, and how to identify and challenge reductionist paradigms that limit our understanding of health and healing.

The questions posed in this stage are designed to spark critical thinking and self-reflection, encouraging you to question your current beliefs and perspectives on health and wellness. You will be challenged to consider whether you view your body as a machine or a garden, and how metaphors and paradigms shape our perception of reality.

Through this stage, you will gain a new understanding of the interconnectedness of body systems and the power of Systems Thinking, which will allow you to become a more holistic and effective herbalist. This transformative learning experience will expand your understanding of health and healing, and empower you to apply this knowledge to create positive changes in your life and the lives of others.
__________________________________________________
In this module we go through the different body systems and which herbs are good for them. We also cover the extracellular matrix (ECM) which is the non-cellular component present within all tissues and organs. It not only provides essential physical scaffolding for the cellular constituents, it also initiates crucial biochemical and biomechanical cues that are required for tissue changes, differentiation, and homeostasis—which means it is an active dynamic regulating system of the body.

It is the total environment for the cells, and the cells are completely dependent on the matrix. We will learn how all body systems are connected and regulated by the matrix. We will also cover the power herbs that support and nourish the extracellular matrix.

We will cover the power of Systems Thinking, paradigms, metaphors, and how they shape our worldview. How you can apply them to both your study and use of herbs.

Some questions to spark your thinking around these three important concepts. Honestly, I have students' lives transformed through learning about these concepts that underlie our thinking and structure of our world view.
  • Do you know that allopathic medicine is a linear paradigm based on three-hundred-year-old Cartesian thinking? What is a linear paradigm?
  • Do you think of your body as a machine or garden?
  • What metaphor or metaphors do you live your life by? Is it a journey, a structure or a living organism?
  • Is mainstream medicine a reductionist or holistic paradigm?
  • Do you believe that most diseases have a single cause or they are more complex and involve many factors?
In this section we will:
  • Cover metaphors and how they affect our perception of reality: juggling balls as a life metaphor is very stressful compared to a life metaphor of a tree, for example.
  • Explore Systems Thinking: this truly is a detox from a potentially damaging paradigm (reductionism). The deeper we understand systems and are able to communicate systems thinking, the better herbalists we will be.
  • Look at paradigms: if we do not understand the paradigms that we are using and living, we are unaware how they shape our life. Paradigms are only consensual reality constructs but they shape our thinking and perceptions.

Third Stage: Dreambody and Process-Oriented Herbalism

The third stage of the course, "Dreambody and Process-Oriented Herbalism," offers a transformative learning experience by exploring the concept of Dreambody and how it can be applied to learning and healing. You will learn how to communicate with your body through dreaming and how to use this knowledge to identify the underlying causes of symptoms.

Through this stage, you will gain a new understanding of the nine pathways through which dreaming communicates and what our dreaming bodies are trying to tell us about how we are living and the direction we are taking in the material world. You will also learn how to use Shamanism to find your herbal allies, plants that can enhance your healing by developing a deep relationship with them.

This stage provides you with the healing wisdom needed to weave together the material world and dream world, providing you with a more holistic and integrated approach to health and healing. The transformative learning experience offered in this stage will help you to become a more effective and intuitive herbalist, allowing you to better support yourself and others on their healing journeys.
__________________________________________________
In this module we will explore dreambody and how we can apply it to both our learning and healing. For example, If you apply a poultice to your liver, what dreams, thoughts or feelings does it awaken? Learn how many pathways or channels a body symptom can occupy? When we change channels your symptom may change? Learn how the doshas in Ayurveda mostly manifest in certain channels. We will learn more about doshas in the next module on Ayurveda.

Some questions to ponder around the dreaming body.
  • Do you think that dreaming only happens at night or is it always in the background manifesting symptoms, synchronicities and more?
  • How is a symptom a body dream?
  • How many channels or paths can dreaming communicate through?
In this step we will:
  • Explore Dreambody and learn how dreaming communicates through the nine pathways.
  • Discover what our dreaming bodies are trying to communicate about how we are living and the direction we are taking in the material world.
  • Learn the healing wisdom that will help you to weave the material world and dreamworld together, hopefully providing you with an experience of an increased sense of wholeness and health.
  • Use Shamanism to find our herbal allies, plants which we can develop a deep relationship with, to enhance our healing.

Fourth Stage: Ayurveda

The fourth stage of the course, "Ayurveda," offers a transformative learning experience that explores the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda, a science that considers the relationship between body processes, the outside environment, diet, and emotional health. Through this stage, you will learn about Doshas, the fundamental elements of nature and the universe that are represented in the human body. You will also gain a deeper understanding of how the seasons, times of day, and cycles affect the quality of your life, and how to live in harmony with them for optimal health and less stress.

Through this stage, you will learn how to confidently choose the right herb for your personal constitution and the best time to administer them, proper dosage and preparation. You will also learn how to balance excesses and nourish deficiencies, adapt or modulate the elements for optimum well-being, and identify whether you are predominantly a Vata, Pitta or Kapha dosha (or a combination of any of these).

This stage offers a transformative learning experience that will deepen your understanding of health and wellness, and empower you to make positive changes in your life. By the end of this stage, you will have gained valuable knowledge and skills that you can apply to your personal and professional life, ultimately leading to greater well-being and balance.
__________________________________________________
In this module we will explore the ancient and modern wisdom of Ayurveda, a science that considers the relationship of body processes, the outside environment, diet and emotional health. In Ayurveda, illness is seen as an "imbalance;" which can be restored through natural treatment using meditation, herbs and cleansing. Ayurveda is an ancient, complex system of medicine, often considered the world's first medical system. The profound healing wisdom of Ayurveda originated in the ancient culture of India and is thought to be the oldest natural healing system, predating even Chinese medicine.

The word "Ayurveda;" means "knowledge of life" in Sanskrit. At the heart of Ayurvedic medicine is the concept that the elements are represented in the human body through Doshas (pronounced Doe-sha). Over five thousand years ago the ancient seers of India imparted to their disciples the truths they learned about the Universe while in a supramental state of meditation. This knowledge exists today in text written in Sanskrit, and contains the secrets of the interaction of body, mind and soul within the context of the fundamental elements of Nature and the Universe..

As a potential student of Ayurveda you might want to ponder these questions. The course is designed to give you answers or solutions to the questions.
  • Do you know how the seasons, the times of the day, and the cycles affect the quality of your life?
  • What is the best time to administer medicine based on the organ or body system you want to affect?
  • How can you find out if you are predominately a fire, water or air constitution, or maybe a blend?
  • What is the best way to treat an air, fire or water person when they are out of balance?
  • How does excess air, fire or water manifest when it is out of balance?
In this step:
During this lesson you will learn about Ayurveda:
  • How to live in harmony with the seasons, daily cycles and Lifecycles for optimal health and less stress.
  • How to confidently choose the right herb for your personal constitution and the best time to administer them, proper dosage and preparation. How to balance excesses and nourish deficiencies.
  • The five elements and six qualities that form the foundation by Ayurvedic energetics and how to adapt or modulate the elements for optimum well-being.
  • Whether you are predominantly either a Vata, Pitta or Kapha dosha (or combination of any of these). Respectively, the Sanskrit words Vata, Pitta and Kapha mean Air, Fire and Water.

Fifth Stage: Wellbeing Consultation

The fifth stage of the course, "Wellbeing Consultation: Create Resiliency through a Systems Approach," offers a transformative learning experience that teaches you how to conduct a thorough herbal wellness evaluation. Through this stage, you will learn how to look at the whole system, including the physical, emotional, social and economic, and spiritual dimensions, to see where the system is breaking down and where you can apply interventions that would restore resiliency to the system.

Using the wisdom of Ayurveda and Western Herbalism, you will learn how to determine which herbs are best suited to each client based on their constitution and the latest scientific research. You will also learn how to use Dreambody to look at the dreaming process behind any symptom and how it manifests in different areas of a client's life. Ultimately, this stage offers you the knowledge and skills to create a personal healing program that is easy to follow and implement, empowering you to become more aware of what creates health and what is causing disease in your life.

Through this stage, you will learn how to read feedback and know whether you are responding positively or negatively to your choices. This stage offers a transformative learning experience that will deepen your understanding of health and wellness, and empower you to make positive changes in your life. By the end of this stage, you will have gained valuable knowledge and skills that you can apply to your personal and professional life, ultimately leading to greater well-being and balance.

What a wonderful book, a jewel of originality among the plethora of herb books lining the bookshelves. As its name implies, The Herbal Healing Journey is a playbook, a workbook, a guiding light, and a healing journey into the green world. I found the instructions clearly presented and the many exercises developed to bring one closer in touch with the plant world, intriguing. I’m looking forward to incorporating several of the techniques described throughout this herbal “Play/Work Book” in my own teachings and classes.

He has been and continues to be a positive force in the lives of many people.

The Creation Story of The Healing Journey

Our Starting Myth:

The start of The Healing Journey Program was marked by a very special event in 1986. This may seem incredible, but I assure you that this is exactly as I remember it.

It was the last evening of a series of evening classes I had been teaching. The students were doing their final presentations. The last student was my dear friend Stan Tomandl. He passed around a special charcoal salve that he had made from the Devil’s Club plant. He asked us to place it anywhere on our body that needed healing or attention. Next he began a healing dance using two deer antlers. His dance was very entrancing and the class continued late into the evening.

Stan and I left for home in my red van. We took one look at each other and knew that we wanted to go further with the wonderful state we were experiencing. I suggested that we go to see my Oak tree in Beacon Hill park (a local park in Victoria, BC, Canada). I call it my Oak tree as I had been doing intensive plant attunement work with it over the last few years. It was the first plant that I ever did an attunement with.

It was snowing as we drove into the park and parked my van. We got out and started walking towards the tree. It was a magical night and the snow was gently falling through the giant oaks. We came over the crest of a small hill and my heart leapt into my throat. There laying on the ground was my friend, the oak tree. I was stunned. Next, I saw this beautiful blue glow coming from the base of the tree where it had snapped.

As I approached the tree, there was an incredible female deva bathed in blue light, hovering just above the broken stump. I gazed at her in wonderment. She smiled and spoke to me. "I called you here tonight to say goodbye. I could not leave without saying goodbye. Thank you for your love and friendship. I am now finished here and ready to move on. Goodbye."

This experience profoundly changed my relationship with the plant world. I had been studying and practicing plant attunements for many years through my teachers, Ellen White and Dorothy McLean (Findhorn). Now I experienced for myself the truth of those teachings. My confidence in sharing these more esoteric teachings increased dramatically. The deep nourishment I experience from the trees and plants continues to this day. I continue to be inspired to share this knowledge and the plants to all.

Three weeks later, the first Healing Journey began.
